Rufus – Create bootable USB drives the easy way

Rufus is a utility primarily used for creating bootable USB drives from ISOs. It was created by Akeo Consulting from Ireland and has an active github with over 52 contributors. One great feature of Rufus is that it does not have to be installed. Just download and run it from your computer.

Rufus supports creating bootable installation media for many popular operating systems. A complete list is available on their website, but to list a few:

  • Windows 7/8/10
  • Windows Server 2012 & 2016
  • Popular Linux distributions
  • FreeNAS
  • Hiren’s Boot CD
  • Pfsense
  • & others

Rufus supports both UEFI as well as GPT installation media. I have personally used Rufus for creating Windows bootable USB drives and have found it to be much faster than the official Microsoft installation media tool.
