Are there any specific rules? For example, can one advertise/promote something, in a “non-spammy” way, either in questions or in answers/comments?

And I have a notification saying I lost 0 points – why is that, and how can one lose points?

The point has become moot.  I just can’t keep up with the site.

From the little I’ve tested I guess I “lose 0 points” when I submit any vote, and the same notification gets updated every time I vote, rather than a new notification being generated each time.

Is it the same for you guys, or is it because my membership hasn’t been confirmed yet?

I guess that you can promote something, although you might get downvoted, which is how you lose reputation points, I would guess. Eli tends to be of the ‘common sense’ approach rather than applying lots of rules – so you could probably promote something so long as it was relevant to the person you were promoting it to and might genuinely be something they’re interested in. This is supposed to be a business community after all.

I’ll upvote this question and you should gain some reputation points.
